By February next year AOL will stop giving support Netscape Navigator including 9, or any previous Netscape Navigator browser. This includes Netscape v1-v4.x, Netscape v6, Netscape v7 Suite, Netscape Browser v8, and Netscape Navigator/Messenger 9. Bye-Bye Netscape Navigator I still remember the time when I first start using the internet with Netscape way back 1998 when my godfather open his computer café. Its so sad that Netscape Navigator will be gone.
Air France has just announced that they will launch a six-month trial of its first in-flight mobile phone service using GSM network. According to the spokesperson, the service will be rolled out on its Airbus A318 aircraft first and those passengers that are on the flight may not be notified before the departure that they are on the ‘trial’ flight. The only way to tell the difference is by looking at the “No Mobile” sign besides “No Smoking” or “Fasten your seat belt” sign.
The backhaul of this technology is the satellite system that able to communicate to the ground station while linking it to the in-flight pico base station. There will be a pico basestation in the flight that is able to direct all these communication channels to the satellite without interfering the in-flight navigation system. The communication system, setup by OnAir (a Geneve-based company) is aiming to give Air France a complete new communication solution that enables seamless connectivity even while they are on the air. Good thing is, the calling rate is said to be comparable with existing international roaming charges and will be more affordable to public.
AirFrance will have to examine the test results before implementing this solution to other fleets. Anyway, we should expect to see more similar system being rolled out to other Airlines in short future.

Advansus Unveiled New Nano ITX NTC100 with AMD Geode LX800 Processor

Advansus has just released a new Nano ITX based PC for industrial market. Nano ITX is a smaller form factor computer board proposed by VIA Technologies. Normal PC architecture will typically have Mini ITX for low power embedded segment. Known as NTC100-LX800, it can be targeted for industrial applications such as factory automation PC, Panel PC or other small form
The device is powered by AMD Geode LX800 which is quite famous for low power embedded market. Running at 500MHz, it is more than sufficient for less complicated task processing especially in the consumer as well as industrial segments. The processor is about 1 watt which is extremely low power and is most suitable for small form factor and fan-less application. Besides, it is equipped with LVDS (Low voltage differential signaling) for external flat panel display connection. By having this feature, the BOM (Bill of Material) cost can be reduced for price sensitive end products. It is further supported by 10/100Mbps LAN (Local Area Network) Ethernet port for network connectivity. Optional available are the wireless LAN module through Mini-PCI slot for mobile network communication.
The device is weighted at only 0.7 kg with dimension of 144 mm X 42 mm X 170 mm. If you think the processing power is sufficient to run your home or mobile computing, you can just get one for your digital home use.
Apple has recently released a patent concept of volume control detection automatically without the involvement of human being. According to the source, the audio adjustments will be done completely automatic based on the software algorithm running on its ipod or iPhone products. By having this feature implementation, it is able to prevent permanent damage to the users’ hearing capability if they are exposed too long to the loud audio environment.
The mechanism behind this concept is an intelligent software that able to detect how long the music has been playing continuously at certain volume level and once it exceeds the threshold settings, the volume control will be automatically turn on to adjust down the audio level for subsequent playing. Besides, the software will also able to determine the mute level of how long the user has stopped listening to the songs and when there is sufficient ‘rest’ time, the volume level will be increased back to its previous default level.
I am curious on how it comes out with the threshold level there are different audio volume that individual can tolerate. So, it would be even greater idea if there is a manual control capability on volume control instead of leaving it to fully automatic control. Else, you may not able to find any volume button design in future Apple’s products.
As Nokia users know, the mobile phones from Nokia typically have two ports for headset and charger, which are quite close to one another. As a solution to avoid any confusion as to which jack port would go where, Nokia is considering to make its cellphones more intuitive by magnetizing these ports, just like Apple’s MagSafe ports on Macbook.
According to the company, the magnetic port will make sure that the jack is inserted correctly every single time thanks to the opposite magnets for the “charger and headset”. In addition, these magnetized ports will also prevent dust from settling into the ports.
